Are You Satisfied?
Are you satisfied? Where does your satisfaction come from? Some might say they ponder questions like these on the semi-regular, while others, not as often. It’s easy to find yourself coasting through life without considering these types of important questions. Thoughts such as: are you satisfied in life, and where does your satisfaction come from, reveal information about yourself that you would otherwise fail to uncover.
Psychology Today states that being satisfied is more of a trait than a reflection of the objective aspects of a person’s life. This means that your satisfaction is not directly correlated with worldly possessions, relationships, careers, or anything tangible.
So how do you develop the character trait of satisfaction? Where do you start? By turning to the scriptures.
“The Lord will guide you continually, giving you water when you are dry and restoring your strength. You will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring…The Lord will be your delight. I will give you great honor and satisfy you with the inheritance I promised to your ancestor Jacob.” -Isaiah 58:11, 14
What do you do when you feel that ache in your soul for something more? If you pay attention when you’re feeling it, you can turn to The Lord and ask Him for help and insight. This is the only way you can truly learn when your priorities are misplaced.
When your soul is aching for something more, this most likely means your priorities are out of alignment. Realigning your priorities starts with acknowledging what you value, why, and how much more important those valuables are to you than God. No one wants to admit that! No one wants to acknowledge, “I value my success more than God” or “My relationship with my spouse is more important to me than God”. But that’s the case all too often. The way to combat that is to start by admitting it. To begin by falling on your face before God and owning up to how you feel and where you have misaligned priorities.
Satisfaction comes from the only one true living God, psychology points to that. Humanity would think with a certain amount of financial security, status, and enjoyment in your career you would be satisfied. But psychologists and scholars alike confirm that satisfaction has far more to do with your internal world than your external reality.
“You make known to me the path of life; in Your presence, there is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” -Psalm 16:11
Take time to spend with the Lord today. Ask Him to show you where your priorities lie and write them down. This is a great starting point for re-writing your values. Your values and priorities speak volumes about your character. God wants your undivided attention. He wants you to fall at His feet in reverence, valuing Him above all else- in the presence of His holiness, it is demanded. This is where you find true satisfaction. This is sold-out dependence. This is radical Christianity.
